Jack and Bill's Great Adventure

They say it sure is dark at 4:30 in the morning in November. That’s when it all started. Jack and Bill were going on a road trip. This was not just an ordinary trip but a trip of recovery. Jack and Bill were going to Pennsylvania to pick up Bill’s now running 1965 Corvette.
With a full tank of gas and a U-Haul car trailer in tow, our heros set off to Mifflinville, PA. Located close to the center of Pennsylvania, this is the home to ace Corvette restorer Ron Hummel. The trip is close to 400 miles each way and our boys had visions of doing the round trip in a single day.
They took the Pike to I84 and started the long southwesterly path through Connecticut and then New York. A quick fuel stop for both the guys and the truck in Fishkill, NY was followed by more of I84. Soon they crossed the PA boarder and continued on I84 until it finally ends at I81. When I81 intersects with I80, the trip started its due west course. A short seven hours after leaving, they arrived at Ron’s home.
The first thing on the agenda was to hear music from the ’65’s side pipes. There is no sound quite as sweet as a solid lifter 327 lopey idle exiting out of a pair of side exhausts. After the boy’s heart rates settled down, the loading of the pickup with the extra parts, used parts and the few that still need to be installed. Next came getting the coupe up on the trailer, strapping it down and a long goodbye to Ron.
Jack wanted Bill to take the first leg, just in case the coupe slid off the trailer. It towed like a dream. Punching “home” into the GPS gave the boys an ETA of 8:30 p.m. but they knew it would be a bit later. The weather was not going to cooperate and rain was expected. Also, they choose to drop their speed since they now had precious cargo. They maintained a steady speed, retracing the steps they had made a few hours earlier. A stop for fuel and a driver change, the boys continued on into the night. With the drizzle and darkness, the roads looked like dark holes. The iPod pumped out a melancholy set of favorite doo-wop tunes as they forged ahead, continually trading positions with big rigs as they made their way back home. At 9:00 Jack was dropped of and Bill was home by 9:30 with his baby now safely in his garage. It was the end to a 17 hour day, but not one the boys will soon forget.
